RESUMO

Hybrid supercapacitors can produce extraordinary advances in specific power and energy to display better electrochemical performance and better cyclic stability. Amalgamating metal oxides with metal-organic frameworks endows the prepared composites with unique properties and advantageous possibilities for enhancing the electrochemical capabilities. The present study focused on the synergistic effects of the CuCo(5-NIPA)-Nd2O3 composite. Employing a half-cell configuration, we conducted a comprehensive electrochemical analysis of CuCo(5-NIPA), Nd2O3, and their composite. Owing to the best performance of the composite, the hybrid device prepared from CuCo(5-NIPA)-Nd2O3 and activated carbon demonstrated a specific capacity of 467.5 C g-1 at a scan rate of 3 mV s-1, as well as a phenomenal energy and power density of 109.68 W h kg-1 and 4507 W kg-1, respectively. Afterwards, semi-empirical techniques and models were used to investigate the capacitive and diffusive mechanisms, providing important insights into the unique properties of battery-supercapacitor hybrids. These findings highlight the enhanced performance of the CuCo(5-NIPA)-Nd2O3 composite, establishing it as a unique and intriguing candidate for applications requiring the merging of battery and supercapacitor technologies.

RESUMO

Histotripsy is a noninvasive medical technique that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat liver tumours. The two main histotripsy methods are boiling histotripsy and cavitation cloud histotripsy. Boiling histotripsy uses prolonged ultrasound pulses to create small boiling bubbles in the tissue, which leads to the breakdown of the tissue into smaller subcellular fragments. Cavitation cloud histotripsy uses the ultrasonic cavitation effect to disintegrate target tissue into precisely defined liquefied lesions. Both methods show similar treatment effectiveness; however, boiling histotripsy ensures treatment stability by producing a stable boiling bubble with each pulse. The therapeutic effect is ascribed to mechanical damage at the subcellular level rather than thermal damage. This article discusses the mechanisms, treatment parameters, and potential of histotripsy as a minimally invasive procedure that provides precise and controlled subcellular damage.

RESUMO

Under changing climatic scenarios, grassland conservation and development have become imperative to impart functional sustainability to their ecosystem services. These goals could be effectively and efficiently achieved with targeted genetic improvement of native grass species. To the best of our literature search, very scant research findings are available pertaining to gene editing of non-cultivated grass species (switch grass, wild sugarcane, Prairie cordgrass, Bermuda grass, Chinese silver grass, etc.) prevalent in natural and semi-natural grasslands. Thus, to explore this novel research aspect, this study purposes that gene editing techniques employed for improvement of cultivated grasses especially sugarcane might be used for non-cultivated grasses as well. Our hypothesis behind suggesting sugarcane as a model crop for genetic improvement of non-cultivated grasses is the intricacy of gene editing owing to polyploidy and aneuploidy compared to other cultivated grasses (rice, wheat, barley, maize, etc.). Another reason is that genome editing protocols in sugarcane (x = 10-13) have been developed and optimized, taking into consideration the high level of genetic redundancy. Thus, as per our knowledge, this review is the first study that objectively evaluates the concept and functioning of the CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)/Cas9 technique in sugarcane regarding high versatility, target specificity, efficiency, design simplicity, and multiplexing capacity in order to explore novel research perspectives for gene editing of non-cultivated grasses against biotic and abiotic stresses. Additionally, pronounced challenges confronting sugarcane gene editing have resulted in the development of different variants (Cas9, Cas12a, Cas12b, and SpRY) of the CRISPR tool, whose technicalities have also been critically assessed. Moreover, different limitations of this technique that could emerge during gene editing of non-cultivated grass species have also been highlighted.

RESUMO

Background Penile cancer is a rare malignancy usually requiring surgery to achieve oncological control of the primary tumour but often at the expense of functional length. The presenting stage of the primary is a crucial factor in determining the most appropriate surgical procedure. Accurate preoperative staging is essential, and current modalities include clinical and radiological assessment. Clinical staging can, however, be hampered by patient body habitus and unreliable for more advanced T4 tumours, whereas radiological staging allows for more detailed identification of tissue planes and tumour involvement. There is no clear consensus on the preferred imaging technique, although, in the current European Association of Urology penile cancer guidelines, MRI is recommended with the use of ultrasound when MRI is not available. It was recommended that having the penis in an erect state by the administration of intra-cavernosal prostaglandin gave a more detailed picture enabling a greater predictor of corporal involvement. Recent studies have, however, suggested that there may be no such advantage. Methodology A retrospective review was conducted of all patients who underwent surgery for penile cancer comparing the preoperative MRI stage with the final pathological stage between July 2009 and June 2023. In addition to the MRI, patients were given an intra-cavernosal injection of prostaglandin E1 to induce tumescence unless otherwise indicated. All imaging was reported by a single consultant uro-radiologist with surgery undertaken by a single surgeon and pathology reviewed through the supra-regional penile multidisciplinary team. Results A total of 136 penile cancer patients were included in the review. Within this cohort, 98 patients had an MRI without intra-cavernosal prostaglandin and the number who had Ta, T1, T2, T3 and T4 histopathological stages was 3, 31, 45, 18, and 1, respectively. The preoperative MRI stage had a low agreement with the final histological stage for early tumours, with sensitivities and specificity of 35% and 97% for T1 and 56% and 80% for T2, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity increased for cavernosal involvement at 83% and 95%, respectively. In addition, a further 38 patients had an MRI in conjunction with an injection of prostaglandin E1 which failed to show any diagnostic improvement in sensitivity or specificity in the preoperative MRI stage. Conclusions The use of MRI as a preoperative modality for staging penile cancer performs best for identifying tumour involvement of the cavernosal bodies. Performing the MRI with the penis erect with the use of an intra-cavernosal injection did not offer any additional benefit in accurately staging penile cancer.

RESUMO

This study used an organophoto-oxidative material to degrade the toxic azo dye, methylene blue (MB), due to its hazardous effects on aquatic life and humans. MB is traditionally degraded using metal-based catalysts, resulting in high costs. Several organic acids were screened for organo-photooxidative applications against various azo dyes, and ascorbic acid (AA), also known as vitamin C, was found to be best for degradation due to its high photooxidative activity. It is an eco-friendly, edible, and efficient photooxidative material. A photocatalytic box has been developed for the study of organo-photooxidative activity. It was found that when AA was added, degradation efficiency increased from 42 to 95% within 240 min. Different characterization techniques, such as HPLC and GC-MS, were used after degradation for the structural elucidation of degraded products. DFT study was done for the investigation of the mechanistic study behind the degradation process. A statistical tool, RSM, was used for the optimization of parameters (concentration of dye, catalyst, and time). This study develops sustainable and effective solutions for wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Salinity stress can significantly delay plant growth. It can disrupt water and nutrient uptake, reducing crop yields and poor plant health. The use of strigolactone can be an effective technique to overcome this issue. Strigolactone enhances plant growth by promoting root development and improvement in physiological attributes. The current pot study used strigolactone to amend chili under no salinity and salinity stress environments. There were four treatments, i.e., 0, 10µM strigolactone, 20µM strigolactone and 30µM strigolactone. All treatments were applied in four replications following a completely randomized design (CRD). Results showed that 20µM strigolactone caused a significant increase in chili plant height (21.07%), dry weight (33.60%), fruit length (19.24%), fruit girth (35.37%), and fruit yield (60.74%) compared to control under salinity stress. Significant enhancement in chili chlorophyll a (18.65%), chlorophyll b (43.52%), and total chlorophyll (25.09%) under salinity stress validated the effectiveness of 20µM strigolactone application as treatment over control. Furthermore, improvement in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium concentration in leaves confirmed the efficient functioning of 20µM strigolactone compared to other concentrations under salinity stress. The study concluded that 20µM strigolactone is recommended for mitigating salinity stress in chili plants. Growers are advised to apply 20µM strigolactone to enhance their chili production under salinity stress.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To conduct a comprehensive narrative review of the evidence for radiotherapy target volumes to the neck, after neck dissection, for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma from an unknown primary (HNSCCUP). Inclusion or exclusion of mucosal irradiation is not the focus of interest for this review article. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature (PubMed-Medline, EMBASE database and Cochrane library) was searched using the relevant keywords. The search results were limited to the studies published in year 2000 or after. RESULTS: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. All studies were retrospective in nature. The incidence of contralateral recurrence rates in the untreated neck when the involved neck only is treated remains very low (0%-10%). Survival has improved over the past two decades, most likely due to improved diagnostic techniques and the increase in incidence of HPV-related disease. CONCLUSION: Given the rarity of disease, level one evidence from randomised controlled trials is lacking. Available data are retrospective but support unilateral post-operative radiotherapy as a treatment option in selected cases.

RESUMO

Objective This study aims to improve foundation doctors' knowledge of guidelines for confirming nasogastric (NG) tube position and to enhance their confidence and competency in NG tube placement. Methods A three-part educational approach was designed, which included an educational leaflet and allowed the assessment of a participant's knowledge of guidelines pertaining to NG tube positioning before and after education. This educational leaflet and accompanying pre- and post-learning assessments were distributed among NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK between January 2022 and June 2022. All participants were foundation doctors in the UK. Those who had entered further training after the completion of their foundation training, at the time of assessment distribution, were excluded. Results A total of 173 participants completed this assessment. We found a significant increase in confidence among participants following the education (p<0.05). There was also a significant improvement in objective knowledge of guidelines on NG tube position confirmation following education (p<0.05). Conclusions Current knowledge on NG tube positioning is lacking among foundation doctors, but this can be significantly improved with simple educational leaflets. Furthermore, many participants felt that more training is needed, and this topic should be included in an essential teaching program.

RESUMO

Background: The Entrapped Temporal Horn (ETH) is characterized by localized enlargement of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle of the brain. This study aimed to investigate the factors, development, prognosis, and effective treatment. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic search was conducted in major research databases. The inclusion criteria included patients of all ages with TTH diagnosis in cohort studies, case series, and case reports. Results: Our study included 160 patients and 49 studies. The major causes of TTH were neoplastic lesions (42.3%), infections (22.3%), and cystic disease (13.08%). Of these cases, 71 were unrelated to cranial surgery, while 89 were unrelated to prior surgeries. Headache was the most common symptom (41.91%), followed by seizures (13.20%), drowsiness (12.50%) and memory loss (11.00%). Surgery was not required in 17 patients. Fenestration of the trapped temporal horn was performed in 24 patients, while VP/VA shunt surgeries were performed in the majority (57 patients) owing to favorable outcomes, lower revision rates, and extensive experience. However, TTH recurred in six of the 21 patients who underwent endoscopic ventriculocisternostomy. Tumors were the main cause, and isolated headache was the most frequent symptom. Ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS) are preferred because of their positive outcomes, lower revision rates, and wider expertise. Tumors near the trigonal area pose a higher risk. Conclusion: Although TTH remains a rare condition, VPS continues to be the most widely preferred procedure among surgeons.

RESUMO

The objective of this research is to create a highly effective approach for eliminating pollutants from the environment through the process of photocatalytic degradation. The study centers around the production of composites consisting of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using an ultrasonic-assisted method, with a focus on their capacity to degrade ibuprofen (IBF) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) via photodegradation. The impact of rGO on the structure, morphology, and optical properties of CCTO was inspected using XRD, FTIR, Raman, FESEM, XPS, BET, and UV-Vis. Morphology characterization showed that rGO particles were dispersed within the CCTO matrix without any specific chemical interaction between CCTO and C in the rGO. The BET analysis revealed that with increasing the amount of rGO in the composite, the specific surface area significantly increased compared to the CCTO standalone. Besides, increasing rGO resulted in a reduction in the optical bandgap energy to around 2.09 eV, makes it highly promising photocatalyst for environmental applications. The photodegradation of IBF and CIP was monitored using visible light irradiation. The results revealed that both components were degraded above 97% after 60 min. The photocatalyst showed an excellent reusability performance with a slight decrease after five runs to 93% photodegradation efficiency.

RESUMO

Co-creation is the active involvement of all stakeholders, including students, in educational design processes to improve the quality of education by embodying inclusivity, transparency and empowerment. Virtual co-creation has the potential to expand the utility of co-creation as an inclusive approach by overcoming challenges regarding the practicality and availability of stakeholders, typically experienced in face-to-face co-creation. Drawing from the literature and our experiences of virtual co-creation activities in different educational contexts, this twelve tips paper provides guidelines on how to effectively operationalize co-creation in a virtual setting. Our proposed three-phased approach (preparation, conduction, follow-up) might help those aiming to virtually co-create courses and programs by involving stakeholders beyond institutes and across borders.

RESUMO

The structural and electronic properties of zinc clusters (Znn) for a size range of n = 2-15 are studied using density functional theory. The particle swarm optimization algorithm is employed to search the structure and to determine the ground-state structure of the neutral Zn clusters. The structural motifs are optimized using the density functional theory approach to ensure that the structures are fully relaxed. Results are compared with the literature to validate the accuracy of the prediction method. The binding energy per cluster is obtained and compared with the reported literature to study the stability of these structures. We further assess the electronic properties, including the ionization potential, using the all-electron FHI-aims code employing G0W0 calculations, and the G0W0Г0(1) correction for a few smaller clusters, which provides a better estimation of the ionization potential compared to other methods.

RESUMO

Drug delivery techniques based on polymers have been investigated for their potential to improve drug solubility, reduce systemic side effects, and controlled and targeted administration at infection site. In this study, we developed a co-polymeric hydrogel composed of graphene sheets (GNS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and chitosan (CS) that is loaded with methotrexate (MTX) for in vitro liver cancer treatment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to check the structural properties and surface morphology. Moreover, tests were conducted on the cytotoxicity, hemolytic activity, release kinetics, swelling behaviour and degradation of hydrogels. A controlled release of drug from hydrogel in PBS at pH 7.4 was examined using release kinetics. Maximal drug release in six hours was 97.34%. The prepared hydrogels did not encourage the HepG2 growth and were non-hemolytic. The current study highlights the potential of GNS-based hydrogel loaded with MTX as an encouraging therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. HepG2 cell viability of MTX-loaded CS-PVA-GNS hydrogel was (IC50 5.87 µg/200 mL) in comparison to free MTX (IC50 5.03 µg/200 mL). These outcomes recommend that hydrogels with GNS ensure improved drug delivery in cancer microenvironment while lessening adverse consequences on healthy cells.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the value of Spinal Instability Neoplastic Score (SINS) in patients with spine metastasis who subsequently developed or did not develop metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC). METHODS: In this single institutional retrospective descriptive observational study, of 589 patients with MSCC who were referred for radiotherapy, 34 patients (with 41 compression sites) met the inclusion criteria: availability of diagnostic MRI spine pre-development of MSCC (MRI-1) and at the time of MSCC development (MRI-2) (CordGroup). For comparison, NoCordGroup consisted of 152 patients (160 sites) treated with radiotherapy to spinal metastases. SINS was compared between the two groups. RESULTS: In CordGroup, the median interval between MRI-1 and MRI-2 was 11 weeks. The median SINS was 8 (range: 4-14) and 9 (range: 7-14) on MRI-1 and MRI-2, respectively. In NoCordGroup, the median SINS was 6 (range: 4-10). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed a trend in difference in SINS value between the two groups. This difference should be a subject of future prospective research in this patient population with poor survival.

RESUMO

Herein, for the very first time, we report a paper-like biomass, eggshell membrane (ESM), as a suitable platform for the fabrication of a colorimetric sensor (E-Cot). Green ethanolic extract, curcumin (CUR), was used as a sensing material to coat with the ESM. The present E-Cot effectively changed its color (yellow to red) in the real-time monitoring for chicken spoilage. The E-Cot exhibits barrier properties due to its inherent semi-permeability characteristics. Interestingly, the E-Cot showed a significant change in total color difference value (ΔE, 0 days - 0.0-39.6, after 1 day - 39.6-42.1, after 2 days - 42.1-53.6, after 3 days- 53.6-60.1, and after 4 days - 60.1-66.3, detectable by the naked eye) in the real-time monitoring for chicken freshness. In addition, the present E-Cot smart colorimetric sensor is reversible with a change in pH, and the sensor can be reused. Further, the hydrophobic nature of the E-Cot was confirmed by water contact angle analysis (WCA, contact angle of 101.21 ± 8.39). Good antibacterial, barrier, and optical properties of the present E-Cot were also found. Owing to the advantages such as green, efficient, cost-effective, biodegradable, reusable, sustainable, and simple preparation, we believe that the present E-Cot would be a more attractive candidate.

RESUMO

Delafloxacin (DFX), one of the latest additions to the fluoroquinolone antibiotics, is gaining heightened recognition in human therapy due to its potential antibacterial efficacy in a wide range of applications. Concerns have arisen regarding its presence in the environment and its potential interactions with multivalent metals, such as calcium (Ca). The present study investigated the trans- and multigenerational effects of environmentally projected concentrations of DFX (100-400 µg DFX L-1) on individual- and population-level responses of parental S. vetulus (F0) and its descendants (F1) under normal (26 mg L-1) and high (78 mg L-1) Ca conditions. Exposure of the F0 generation to DFX under the normal Ca condition resulted in reduced juvenile body length (JBL), increased age-specific survival rate (lx), indicating prolonged developmental time, reduced age-specific fecundity rate (mx), and decreased population growth rate (rm). Under the high Ca condition, JBL, mx, and rm were adversely affected. Transgenerational effects of DFX existed, as F1 individuals exhibited persistent suppressions in at least one endpoint under both Ca conditions even after being transferred to a clear medium. Continuous exposure of the F1 generation to DFX had negative impacts on JBL, mx, and rm under the normal Ca condition, and on JBL and rm under the high Ca condition. However, cumulative effects were not observed, suggesting the potential development of tolerance to DFX in the F1 organisms. These findings suggest that DFX is a harmful compound for the non-target model organism S. vetulus and reveal a potential antagonism between DFX and Ca. Nevertheless, the interaction between other (fluoro)quinolones and Ca remains unclear, necessitating further research to establish this phenomenon more comprehensively, including understanding the interaction mechanism in ecotoxicological contexts.

RESUMO

The interplay between flexoelectric and optoelectronic characteristics provides a paradigm for studying emerging phenomena in various 2D materials. However, an effective way to induce a large and tunable strain gradient in 2D devices remains to be exploited. Herein, we propose a strategy to induce large flexoelectric effect in 2D ferroelectric CuInP2S6 by constructing a 1D-2D mixed-dimensional heterostructure. The strong flexoelectric effect is induced by enormous strain gradient up to 4.2 × 106 m-1 resulting from the underlying ZnO nanowires, which is further confirmed by the asymmetric coercive field and the red-shift in the absorption edge. The induced flexoelectric polarization efficiently boosts the self-powered photodetection performance. In addition, the improved photoresponse has a good correlation with the induced strain gradient, showing a consistent size-dependent flexoelectric effect. The mechanism of flexoelectric and optoelectronic coupling is proposed based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire double-well model, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides a brand-new method to induce a strong flexoelectric effect in 2D materials, which is not restricted to crystal symmetry and thus offers unprecedented opportunities for state-of-the-art 2D devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Cosmetics are applied topically to enhance appearance and are commonly used by women of all ages. Cosmetics contain many chemical agents, but the incidence of adverse reactions is low, possibly due to underreporting. This questionnaire-based study included 392 women to evaluate information on the types of cosmetics purchased between December 2018 and March 2019, their use by the women surveyed, and their associated adverse events. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 392 women in Abbottabad, Pakistan, using a pre-structured and validated questionnaire to evaluate information on the types of cosmetics, their use, and their associated adverse events. Part 1 of the study collected information about demographics. Part 2 contained a total of 11 items, and collected the frequency of use of cosmetic on skin and hair care products. Part 3 consisted of 4 items and collected information about problems encountered due to the use of cosmetics. RESULTS In the winter season, 47.7% (n=187) of women preferred chemical-based cosmetic products, while 30.9% (n=121) preferred Ayurvedic products. Among commonly used cosmetic products, 26.9% (n=106) of women used foundations. The most frequently used skin care product was face wash 39.5% (n=155). The most prevalent adverse events related to cosmetics were pimples (19.9%, n=78), redness (17.6%, n=69), and eye discomfort (15.8%, n=62). Furthermore, 51.3% (n=201) strongly agreed that cosmetics aid in getting a whiter complexion. CONCLUSIONS The survey concluded that most women preferred cosmetics with a chemical base, which are associated with rashes, redness, and acne. It is important to encourage cosmetovigilance and awareness campaigns among cosmetic product sellers and users.
